Compassionate Access

Innovating Compassionate Access, its Implementation, & Evaluation

Different groups of individuals brought together by shared challenges (e.g., life-threatening illness, military or first responder service, natural disasters and grief, etc.) have increasingly sought out the legal, safe access to psychedelic care. Although some recent efforts at both the state and federal level have failed to result in increased access to such care, new pathways are emerging that address this need.

Compassionate Use laws are a federally legal and underutilized means of accessing psychedelic medical treatments for patients with serious diseases and conditions. Implementation research can study how best to deliver novel forms of care in the real world settings where patients would eventually receive such treatments at scale.

When back in 2018 members of the CURA team conducted the first modern psychedelic trial that delivered preparation and integration as group therapy, we were already trying to move the field towards trial designs that would be more accessible and acceptable to patients out in the real world.  We intend to continue this line of work in collaboration with community stakeholders, particularly the Scottsdale Research Institute.
